It’s not about them, it’s about you. At the end of the day, competition boils down to an internal drive to do your best. This week, we hear from LeRoy Gardner III, head coach of the University of the Ozarks wrestling team. He shares tips on staying focused and accountability, keeping yourself prepared for competition, and finding the strength within you to do your best. It can be easy to get caught up in focusing on your competitor—what they’re doing and how hard they’re working—and forget that success begins inside. In order to be the best competitor you can be, you have to learn to push your own boundaries and constantly challenge yourself, so you’re ready to rock when things get tough. Personal accountability means not getting lost in your to-do lists, but finding a way to dig deep and do what needs to be done to advance your own goals.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Re-frame what success looks like on an individual basis
  • Raise your game and demonstrate your preparedness to compete
  • Hold yourself accountable to the process
  • Shift the focus from external to internal motivation
  • Find purpose and focus to strengthen your drive

Quotes:

“What are you doing today—what are you doing at this given moment to prepare yourself for when that opportunity comes?” -LeRoy Gardner

“It’s that small thing that in the hardest moment—you’ve got to have all your guns pointed out at achieving whatever it is you’re trying to achieve. There can’t be a single one pointed back at you going, ‘Maybe you can’t do this.’” -LeRoy Gardner

“It’s really easy to get caught up in the to-do list checking off things and not advancing the ball on things that are purposeful and meaningful for yourself and the people around you.” -LeRoy Gardner

“If their first thought was, ‘Oh I can’t go do that,’ that’s probably the first thing they need to go do.” -LeRoy Gardner

“Give everything you’ve got all the time, every time. It’s simple but not easy.” -LeRoy Gardner
